Murray trained as a bricklayer in London, and moved to Llanddeusant, Carmarthenshire, in 1976, where he set up as a builder. Over the years he has developed a reputation for high quality work using traditional materials. He attended the annual repair course run by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) in 1986 and has since helped with the Society’s case work.
